Strong Coasts Webinar – Heritage Sites, Museums, and Community: access and influence in cultural and creative spaces

Presentation by Strong Coasts fellow, Sherilyne Jones. Sherilyne is an archaeologist and museum educator by training who specializes in cultural preservation and works closely to ensure that people are engaged and have access and influence in cultural and creative spaces. She envisions that museums should become more reflective of their communities. She is passionate about culture and museums and worked at the National Institute of Culture & History. There she worked in various capacities including senior archaeologist and director of the Museum of Belize & Houses of Culture, involved in archaeological excavations, strategic planning, cultural policy development and curated numerous exhibitions. Currently, Sherilyne is pursuing a Ph.D. in Applied Anthropology at the University of South Florida.

Sherilyne Jones

Bio: Sherilyne Jones is pursuing a Ph.D. in Applied Anthropology at the University of South Florida. Sherilyne was born in Belmopan, Belize C.A. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of South Florida, Tampa, Fl and received her Master of Arts from the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom.  She is passionate about interdisciplinary work but is an archaeologist and museum educator by training who specializes in cultural preservation and works closely to ensure that people are engaged, have access and influence in cultural and creative spaces.  She envisions that museums should become more reflective of their communities.

She is passionate about culture and museums and before starting her program, worked at the National Institute of Culture & History. There she worked in various capacities including senior archaeologist and director of the Museum of Belize & Houses of Culture, involved in archaeological excavations, strategic planning, cultural policy development and curated numerous exhibitions.  She is a past president of the Museums Association of the Caribbean, member of the technical committee for REDCAMUS (Red Centroamericana de Museos), member of Commonwealth Association of Museums and an adjunct lecturer at the University of West Indies Open Campus in Museum Conservation Skills. Her research interest focuses on Heritage Initiatives and explore the dynamics of community engagement and how the museum can engage with and negotiate the complex colonial pasts of its collections and the community they serve.
